Is the Cliff House going through a renovation?
Overall, it’s business as usual at The Cliff House. We are planning a partial renovation of the existing facility to the style of 1909 as well as a new addition.
Why is The Cliff House being renovated?
The National Park Service is rejuvenating the Sutro Historical District, the western edge of San Francisco, of which The Cliff House is a part.
What will the improvements be?
• Improved facilities, including ADA accessibility
• A more photogenic, appealing exterior
• Expanded public outdoor viewing spaces
• New dining room with even more amazing views
• New Bistro
• Expanded menu
• Restoration of 1909-era building with seismic upgrade
• Improved traffic circulation
• Wider sidewalks, improved pedestrian safety
• Additional accessible, convenient parking
When will you begin construction?
We will begin construction November 2002.
How long will this rehabilitation take? When will it be completed?
We expect that the rehabilitation will be complete in Summer 2004.
What sustainable practices will be used in the renovation?
Environmentally sustainable construction practices will be used in the renovation, including retrieval of reusable resources, establishment of waste management criteria, use of recycled materials, energy-conscious building design, and use of available daylight for all major spaces.
What will happen to the Musée Méchanique?
It will be temporarily located at Pier 45 until its permanent home is built at the new visitors center.
What will happen to the National Park Service Visitor Center at The Cliff House?
The Visitor Center on the Terrace level will close in the Fall 2002. The Musée Méchanique will temporarily move to Pier 45. Preliminary planning is underway for a new visitor facility up at the Merrie Way parking lot above the Sutro Baths. An information kiosk and several wayside exhibits will be temporarily installed at the Merrie Way parking lot.
Will we still be able to visit the Sutro District by bus?
The north annex which houses the Pronto Pup, restrooms, and The Cliff House Visitor Center will be demolished as part of the renovation. The construction crew will use the curve of Point Lobos Avenue as their staging area for trucks, trailers and unloading. Therefore, current tour bus parking will no longer be available at this location. The long-term goal is to relocate tour buses and key visitor services to a new visitor facility in the Sutro Heights area. An interim tour bus location will be developed.
What will happen to the Camera Obscura?
Due to safety, the lower terrace will be closed for the duration of The Cliff House construction. The Camera Obscura, which sits on the lower terrace, will also be closed for the duration of the construction. It will not be affected by the construction and will be fenced off to protect the Camera building. It will remain in its original location.
